How to choose a window fitter

Get every window measured before a price, an itemised written quote with the whole-window U-value, the energy rating certificate for the window, the guarantee in writing and a modest deposit. For the SEAI grant, the work must be done by registered contractors.

The checks

Eight checks before you sign

A proper survey. Every opening measured. A price from photos is a guess.
An itemised written quote: each window's size, opening type, frame, glass, colour, handles, trickle vents, sills, removal and making good, and VAT.
The U-value of the whole window (Uw), in writing, and the rating certificate for that window. See A-rated windows.
The guarantee in writing: on the frames, the glass units and the fitting, for how long, and from whom.
The deposit: windows are made to measure, so a deposit is normal. Keep it modest and in writing.
The lead time and fitting days, and who fits: their own crew or subcontractors.
Insurance: public liability, and employer's liability if they have staff. Ask for the certificate.
A job they did a few years ago, near you, that you can look at.

The fitter must be a registered contractor for the scheme, and the work shouldn't start before your grant offer (SEAI). See how to apply on windowgrants.ie.

The Construction Industry Register Ireland is becoming compulsory one category at a time, with the first categories expected in 2026 (DWF). Until window fitting is covered, it's worth asking, but it isn't required.
